VOICE AND SPEECH: DIALECTS AND ACCENTS
In this course, students will practice the art of creating transcriptions and interpretations of numerous dialects and accents from dramatic literature. We will study specific vowel & consonant substitutions, dynamic rhythms, stresses, and intonations for Received Pronunciation, Cockney, Scottish, Irish, New York, Southern, and French regionalities. Students will observe work from Paul Meier, Robert Blumenfeld, and David Alan Stern as they finesse and refine their ability to speak with elocution and precision. Feedback sessions and vocal tutorials will guide each student through their work, and a deep study on the entire International Phonetic Alphabet (see next page) will be observed. Students will also learn about vocal muscularity (e.g. Bilabial, Labiodental, Dental, Alveolar, Postalveolar, and Glottal phoneme positions.) Students will explore numerous techniques and learn how to inspire their own rigorous voice and speech practice.
