Honors Program: A pathway to excellence.
HON 202 Family Socialization across Cultures
This course will focus on the concepts of the family, love, age, gender, marriage, childhood, relatives, adoption and reproduction in the United States and China. The objectives are (a) to provide the detailed descriptions of dramatically diverse cultures, and (b) to demonstrate that the understanding of human development requires sensitivity to the role of culture and socioeconomic context.
Two projects: One will be the student's own personal family portfolio including the documents of understanding the concepts of the family, love, age, gender, marriage, childhood, relatives, adoption and reproduction from your family members' perspectives. Another one will be to select some one else's family in the community, interview them, and build a family portfolio for that family.
A field experience to China: We will spend the last two weeks of the block in China. We will spend Chinese New Year in China to experience the different concepts discussed in class. We will build a portfolio for our trip to China. In addition, we will select families in China to make a portfolio of as a whole group. In order to travel to China, we need each student to have their passport /visa ready by end of September. We will need to buy tickets three months ahead of time to find an affordable price. Each student needs at least $1,600 for the trip.
