Honors Program: A pathway to excellence.

HON 302 EXPERIENCE PERU: GLOBAL EDUCATION & SERVICE LEARNING

SERVICE LEARNING CENTERED, THIS COURSE PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ALONG SIDE PERUVIAN PROFESSIONALS IN COMMUNITIES OF LIMA, PERU, WITH MARGINALIZED COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN. SCAFFOLDED VOLUNTEER ROLES INCLUDE CARING FOR INFANTS AND CHILDREN, TEACHING CHILDREN, TEACHING ENGLISH, ASSISTING CLASSROOM TEACHERS, CARING FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, AND SHARING OTHER PROFESSIONAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCES.

STUDENTS WILL PREPARE FOR THE EXPERIENCE THE FIRST WEEK OF THE BLOCK ON CAMPUS BY DISCUSSING COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICE LEARNING, GLOBAL EDUCATION AND EDUCATION PRACTICES/ISSUES IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES, AND PERUVIAN CULTURE INCLUDING LANGUAGE. TRAVEL WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 12 DAYS; PARTICIPANTS WILL VOLUNTEER AT THEIR ASSIGNED SITES MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY DURING THE MORNINGS AND AFTERNOONS. CULTURAL ACTIVITES, SEMINARS, AND EXCURSIONS WILL BE SCHEDULED DURING EVENINGS AND THE TWO IN-COUNTRY WEEKENDS. POSSIBLE EXCURSIONS INCLUDE LIMA'S COASTAL VISTAS, LOCAL SALSA VENUES, THE INCAN RUINS OF MACHU PICCHU, AND THE AMAZON JUNGLE
