HON 200/400 THEATRE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Students learn about the history of theatre for social change, beginning with the ancient Greeks. They explore modern events leading to a variety of programs which were intended or resulted in social change, including: Federal Theatre of the New Deal/WPA (1930's), Augusto Boal's "Theatre of the Oppressed " (1950-60'), The San Francisco Mime Troupe and Bread & Puppet Theatre (1960's) , and the Harlem People's Theatre Project. Students study and create their own short plays and/or staged tableaux on "unsafe" topics (such as racism, terrorism, hunger, and unsafe working conditions). They'll stage these with the purpose of igniting dialogue among the audience members.
